There's an ever growing pile of books I want to read…
I was reminded how much I love the Box of Delights last year when I Hot Key did a reread for their bookclub. (Psst! Check out their video on YouTube)
The reminder made me pick up the copy at my mum’s house and begin a reread and then I discovered something interesting. The edition that I was reading (the only version that I had ever read) had some odd moments that didn’t make sense to me as an adult.
It turned out was reading an abridged version of the story, published to tie in with the 1980s TV adaptation. It was still intended for the same age group – still a chapter book for fairly advanced readers – but sections had been cut out. As a child I hadn’t noticed – has brushed aside the strangenessess and just enjoyed the story.
As an adult, it was glaring.
I bought myself a copy of the original text to read and discovered a whole different story. I still loved it, but it had some different resonances.
The story of Kay’s winter holiday and the magic box that must be protected at all costs is one that rewards rereading. It’s also, as it turns out, part of a series. Do yourself a favour – read them both. Believe in magic again. It’s the right time of year for it, after all!
